History

The Citizens Banking Company has come a long way since its origination in 1884. From rented rooms to a three–story office and holding company, Citizens has changed with the banking industry through the years. Believing there was a market for a fourth National Bank in Sandusky, 49 subscribers met in a downtown store to invest $100,000 to organize Citizens National Bank. Nine directors were elected and the bank opened on March 24, 1884, with four employees.

Citizens National Bank operated in rented rooms in the Sloane Block on Columbus Avenue until construction of a new building on West Market Street was completed. The bank maintained these quarters until they moved into the Feick Building in 1924.  The first statement of condition was published April 24, 1884, showing a total loan account of $55,994.23 and deposits of $5,831.20.

Growing out of the East Market facility in the Feick Building, Sandusky City Commissioners gave approval for Citizens Bank to begin one of the largest downtown investments in 20 years. The 1984 announcement of the two million dollar bank plan was in conjunction with the celebration of bank's 100th anniversary.

In 1987, Citizens Bank formed its holding company, First Citizens Banc Corp. (FCZA.com) to allow for future growth and stability.

Since that time the Holding Company, First Citizens Banc Corp., has purchased six (6) banks and the banking offices of several others along with two subsidiary firms.  Operating as Citizens Bank and Champaign Bank, Citizen’s model of establishing a community bank that provides services to multiple local communities has shown tremendous success.  Serving customers in 8 counties through 30 convenient offices and a broad network of ATMs, Citizens Bank brings value to the individual customer and helps all of our customers and each community move ahead!

Now with assets over $1.1 billion, First Citizens Banc Corp. has transformed itself from a community bank to a regional financial services company capable of meeting the needs of our consumer, business, mortgage and wealth management customer. Citizens Bank operated banking locations in Sandusky, Shelby, Huron, Castalia, Berlin Heights, New Washington, Tiro, Chatfield, Norwalk, Willard, Greenwich, Plymouth, Crestline, Shiloh and other cities across northern Ohio. Citizens Bank also has loan production offices in Port Clinton and Marysville.
